It all starts with a song …

I’m a 90’s kid who grew up in a conservative Christian home. Outside of the Sunday morning hymns music was not a big part of my family until I started learning classical piano at ten years old. It was only a handful of years later that I wrote my first angst ridden song ‘Breakaway’ for a high school talent show & I was instantly hooked.

In my early 20’s I began making records & cut my teeth in Sydney’s indie rock band scene. It took me a decade & a few visits to the US to realize that I loved to co-write & collaborate with other artists. So I moved to New York in 2011 in pursuit of a working class music career. Brooklyn felt like a baptism of fire, at once inspiring & heart breaking, but seven years of late nights at Rockwood Music Hall, monthly Songwriting Guild meetings, regular writing trips to Nashville & many Kickstarter campaigns sharpened my skills in a way that I never could have imagined.

It took me a minute to figure out that what 90’s Britpop had in common with Americana was good old fashioned storytelling. And this remains my songwriting obsession. Whether it is staying in character as a dog for a TV show or writing the next heartbreaking ballad I’m always searching for how to paint a complete picture in just a handful of words & a few minutes. When I met my partner Karyn on Instagram I knew I’d found a kindred spirit & now we write songs together as ‘Story & Tune’.
